Why Attend?
In the American Diabetes Association's 2017 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, the ADA recommends that clinicians routinely screen patients with diabetes for psychosocial challenges, including mental health concerns, and refer to a mental health provider with knowledge and experience in diabetes when an issues is identified. However, as this screening becomes part of routine diabetes care there are a limited number of mental health professionals with the knowledge and experience necessary to provide high quality mental health care for people with diabetes. Some predominant psychosocial challenges that people diagnosed with diabetes face include: coping with diagnosis, diabetes specific stresses and worries, depression, neurocognitive effects of diabetes, as well as weight management and eating disorders.
In 2017, APA's Center for Psychology and Health in collaboration with the American Diabetes Association piloted the Mental Health Provider Diabetes Education Program with funding support from the Helmsley Foundation. The content was developed by an expert team of psychologists who have an extensive professional experience with diabetes across the lifespan. |
